Contempo’s virtuoso sextet, eighth blackbird, performs a program by American the common composers who have captivated audiences with their unique sound. From Joseph Schwantner’s bracing moto perpetuo Rhiannon’s Blackbirds, through Gordon Beeferman’s meditative Reliquary, to the clangorous, hard-driving Friction Systems by University of Chicago doctoral candidate David M. Gordon, this program will surprise and energize.

A hundred years ago Arnold Schoenberg heralded a new era in music when he used the prophetic words of Stefan George, “I feel a breath of air from other planets” in an emotionally charged string quartet with soprano. Come join us as we celebrate the centennial of Schoenberg’s masterful opus in a winter concert featuring the Pacifica Quartet and friends. Together we’ll discover stunning new works by composers from around the globe – among them Chicago premieres by Josef Bardanashvili, the delightful Azerbaijani Franghiz Ali-Zadeh, and bright new Japanese-Canadian composer Kotoka Suzuki.

Contempo’s third annual double bill features the music of three visionary composers, Takemitsu, Crumb, and Bardanashvili. Sharing the program is jazz trumpet virtuoso and restless originator Dave Douglas. Experience three exhilarating and intensely personal works, then revel in performances by one of today’s most exciting jazz groups.
